Comunidad Para Baja California is dedicated to improving the lives of the indigenous tribes of Northern Mexico by providing health care and education, developing the infrastructure and promoting economic self-sufficiency.


The Operations Team

Tom Hogan, President Tom splits his time between high tech marketing and Comunidad.  He is the co-founder and Creative Director of Crowded Ocean, a leading marketing firm that works with startups.  He has also taught Holocaust and Genocide Studies at UC Santa Cruz and Santa Clara University.
Ed Klotz – Director of Infrastructure
Ed founded, funded, and directed (for 12 years) a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to working with abused and neglected children providing residential, educational, and therapeutic services for Alameda County’s and Contra Costa County’s most difficult cases.

Ed is also a volunteer Event Coordinator for OneBrick.org, a total volunteer organization that provides and manages groups of 12 -50 volunteers/per event for host non-profits in need of a sizeable number of volunteers for their events.

Currently Ed is the co-owner of an East Bay Real Estate office focusing on residential Real Estate.

Bill Rush, Secretary and Director Facilities (Pilot) Bill has been an active pilot since 1969 and spends a great deal of time traveling, working and providing charitable support in Mexico.  Bill is the past President of the Silicon Valley Insurance Brokers and Agents Association and has served on the Finance Committee of the Insurance Brokers and Agents of the West.
Larry Tabor, Chief Dentist (Pilot) After a rewarding 22-year run as a business owner, Dr. Tabor embarked on a career change to healthcare.  Since receiving his degree from the University of the Pacific, he has been active in many dental outreach programs in the US and Mexico, including service as a director of Los Medicos Voladores (The Flying Doctors), and advisor to several schools, organizations and manufacturers.  Dr.Tabor maintains a private practice in Castro Valley, California.
Teresa Todd, Director of Beca and Treasurer

Teresa has over 37 years in the insurance industry, and has been a partner and CFO with Teifeld & Co Insurance Services since 1986.  She is currently president of the company.  Teresa also served as the Northern California Director for the Insurance Brokers and Agents of the West as well as served on their Service Corp Board which provides new and innovative insurance products to the industry.  She  also Chaired their Young Brokers and Agents Conference in 1996.  Teresa is the past president of the Insurance Agents and Brokers of Silicon Valley and past recipient of their L.I.A.B.L.E. award for outstanding leadership in the community.

Teresa has worked with Comunidad since 2005, first as Trip Coordinator and currently is the Treasurer and head of our Beca (scholarship) program.


Vicky Martinez Rios de Santoyo, Director of Operations
Vicky brings years of involvement in business, education and community development to Comunidad, where she directs all of the organization’s Baja activities and is Comunidad’s primary liaison to the tribal communities.  Trained as a bilingual executive assistant, Vicky started her career working in leading companies supporting directors and other executives.  A native of Mexico City, Vicky’s commitment to community service began while she was still in school, when she was president for the Rotaract Iztapalapa Club.  After relocating to Baja, she worked with a project called School for Parents in Tijauna, where she facilitated services for marginalized groups.  Vicky held a position in the Loan and Exchange department of Cicese, the University for Superior Studies in Ensenada, where she was a liaison with other universities.  Vicky has taught Spanish to groups of American teachers and is very comfortable moving between both languages.  In addition to her passion for community development, Vicky has worked for environmental causes including Proesteros, an organization dedicated to preserving marshlands and coastal lagoons in Northern Mexico.

THE COMUNIDAD BOARD

Tom Hogan, Chairman
A Comunidad founder, Tom is co-founder and Creative Partner at Crowded Ocean, a leading event marketing firm.  Prior to Crowded Ocean he was VP of Corporate Marketing for such organizations as Oracle, Nortel, Lucent and VitalSigns Software.  Tom has been active in human rights most of his professional life, primarily in the fields of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, which he has taught at UC Santa Cruz and Santa Clara University.

Elaine Cummings
As a founding principal of Eastwick Communications, Elaine offers more than 20 years of PR savvy to her clients and to Comunidad.  Elaine has been instrumental in establishing Eastwick’s reputation for delivering strategic thinking and stellar results, with projects such as:

  • Serving as agency for industry powerhouses Oracle, Adobe, Business Objects and Seagate.
  • Launching a number of industry firsts including the first electronic book (Softbook) and the Palm platform.
  • Leading category creation initiatives including Mercury’s Business Technology Optimization (BTO) effort.

Elaine oversees the agency’s operations and staff development and training programs.  Prior to founding Eastwick, Elaine learned the high tech PR ropes during many years at Regis McKenna, working with Apple Computer, Novell and a variety of start-up companies in the software and systems markets.  During the early years of her career, Elaine learned consumer PR at an agency in San Francisco and worked with a computer retail chain learning the channel business.

Mike Wilken
Mike is a renowned cultural anthropologist who has lived and worked among the tribal communities of Baja since 1980.  Trained at UC Santa Cruz, Mike is the founder of CUNA (the Association to Preserve Native Cultures in Baja California) and ADESU, Alliance for Sustainable Development in the Indigenous Communities of Baja California. His role in Comunidad is to ensure that the projects we are engaged in match the needs of the indigenous communities, and to ensure that we understand and respect their traditions and lifestyles.

Ed Klotz

Ed has been involved with buying, renovating, building, and selling residential Real Estate for the last 20+ years.  He has completed over 40 ‘rehab projects’ (single homes and small apartment buildings), as well as, has built 23 new homes, built to sell (spec building).

Licensed as a builder in the late 80’s, Ed worked for private contractors and as a Union carpenter for large construction projects throughout the Bay Area.
